QUEZON CITY — True transformation doesn’t begin with a textbook; it begins when a child believes they are worthy of learning. On September 17, 2026, I had the privilege of joining Gabriel Mallillin and Jaygee Sabio on Share Ko Lang: Mga Kuwento ng Serbisyong Kusang Loob (Season 4, Episode 7), hosted by the Jesuit Volunteers Philippines on Radyo Katipunan 87.9 FM. For us at SAI, moments like this are more than just broadcast interviews—they are open spaces to share our heartbeat, anchor our annual theme of Paglawig, and reaffirm why, after nearly two decades, we remain deeply committed to choosing the most challenged and vulnerable learners first.
During our conversation, we tackled a heavy truth that every educator, parent, and volunteer knows on the ground: illiteracy is rarely just an academic deficit—it is an emotional burden. When a child cannot decode letters or read simple words, they don’t just fall behind; they carry shame. They slip into what we call “Academic Hibernation”—retreating into the background and hiding from the fear of being wrong.
That is why at Silid Aralan, we stand firmly on our core belief: Will Before Skill.
Before we push phonics drills or reading modules, we focus on rebuilding a child’s dignity and creating an environment of unconditional emotional safety. Through our SALTED Framework (Motivate, Escalate, Create, Integrate, Celebrate), every session begins with joy. We celebrate effort over perfection, turning mistakes into discoveries and changing “Hindi ko kaya” into “Ako naman, kaya ko pala!”
We also shined a spotlight on the true engine of our movement: our volunteer Co-Learners. As we celebrate IYV 2026 (International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development), we are constantly reminded that true impact happens when someone simply chooses to show up. You don’t need to be a professional teacher to change a life trajectory; you just need grit and a heart that refuses to give up on a child. When we step into our learning hubs, our goal isn’t merely to turn non-readers into readers. We are here to unlock the inherent potential inside every child so they can discover their purpose and grow into self-directed leaders who will transform their own communities.
To Gabriel, Jaygee, the Jesuit Volunteers Philippines, and the entire Radyo Katipunan team—thank you for giving us a platform to set sail with our story. And to all our donors, partner schools, community hubs, and volunteer Co-Learners across our sites nationwide—thank you for choosing to walk this path with us.
Let us keep igniting hearts, rebuilding dignity, and building spaces of hope for every young learner.
Padayon, Silid Aralan! 💛
